I took Kai to the Tanfield Railway today, its only about 15min drive from my house but I didn’t know it even existed until last weekend. They run two steam trains on sundays, one pulling (from what I could tell) empty trucks and the other pulling coaches which you can go for a short ride in along side the funny mixture of train spotters, families and tabacco-stained beardy men…

Kai really enjoied himself, lots of grins and shouts of ‘Thomas!’ although I think he was a little disappointed the train didn’t *actually* have a face.

There was a brass band playing in one of the sheds, which they’ve got done out like a mini exhibition hall (more beardies) but Kai was obviously feeling the need to get his grove on!

It was Kai’s birthday on Sunday, one already! Its hard to believe. He’s developed so quickly over the last year and its been amazing watching him learn ‘tricks’ (yes I know, he’s not a dog). I can’t imagine what he’s going to be doing in another years time but I know its going to be another year of surprises and exciting firsts.

To keep the photo-fiends at bay, here’s snap of the happy chap

a bit different this year since the squirrel in a santa hat I did last year keeps getting linked to by people on myspace, which is highly annoying. I thought a little branding might stop that this time around.

Well, we managed to get Kai sat on last night (by his Nana, thanks Jan!) which meant we could take advantage of those free tickets. I was a bit wary that it was some sort of elaborate hoax, but no, my cynicism was misplaced and we genuinely were on ‘the list’.

Kir and I were scratching our heads wondering just why I was offered the tickets, its not like I’m in the market for a convertible Micra. In the end I decided that since the film we saw comes out on Friday, it was an attempt to hype it up via bloggers websites, and hopefully get Nissan and the Micra mentioned in the process, no harm in that I guess, its an interesting marketing idea.

Anyway, I might as well sell out and do the honourable thing. On to my very quick review.

The film was good, better than we all expected actually. I had geared myself up for a shallow-but-entertaining tale about a frumpy girl who makes it big in the fashion world. What we actually saw was the story of a frumpy girl who gets a job she doesn’t really want as a stepping stone to bigger and better things, the downside to the job is that her boss is a very ‘difficult’ woman and for the first half of the movie ‘Andy’ spends her time trying to cope with increasingly impossible demands. Once she gets her head around surpassing her bosses’ expectations the film takes a turn, she’s now successful, but her personal life is suffering. In the end the film poses questions about the balance of working life and private life which I think a lot of people will relate to. It was fairly entertaining; we branded it a Sunday afternoon film. The ‘Nigel’ (played by Stanley Tucci) character was good, very dry humour and towards the end, some very well acted scenes which show he has a bit more depth than a camp fashion expert.

On a side note - what’s happened to Cinema nachos?! They’re ROUND! 0_O
